Ecoregions denote areas of general similarity in ecosystems and in the type, quality, and quantity of environmental resources. They are designed to serve as a spatial framework for the research, assessment, management, and monitoring of ecosystems and ecosystem components. By recognizing the spatial differences in the capacities and potentials of ecosystems, ecoregions stratify the environment 85 critical loads for N reported for all the ecoregions of the United States, compare critical loads by 86 life form or ecosystem compartment across all ecoregions, discuss the abiotic and biotic factors 87 that affect the critical loads, and compare critical loads in the United States to those for similar 88 ecoregions/ecosystems in Europe.
